Making Space For The Future
Smart Strategies for Storing Inherited Items

Inheriting a lifetime of possessions from a loved one is both a privilege and a challenge. While every box, photo album, and piece of furniture can feel like a treasured memory, the reality is that keeping everything may not be practical—especially if you’re aiming to store these items in an affordable and appropriately sized storage unit.
At Kiwi Self Storage, we understand that sorting through a loved one’s belongings is an emotional process. Our goal is to help you preserve what matters most while making the best use of space and budget. Here are practical steps to help you reduce the volume of inherited items without compromising on sentimentality.
It can be difficult to know where to start. These simple steps are an effective way to start the process.
1. Start with Purpose: Define Your Storage Goals
Ask yourself:
- Am I keeping these items for sentimental reasons or future use?
- Do I need long-term or short-term storage?
- How often will I access these items?
Answering these questions will guide your decisions about what to keep, what to store, or what to let go. The clearer your purpose, the easier it becomes to sort.
2. Get Help From The Family
Invite family members to claim or share responsibility for certain items. This relieves the pressure, spreads emotional decision making and helps distribute the load, literally and figuratively.
You will end up with less to store and gives them buy-in at a stressful time. Going over things like photo albums and mementos together will help with the grieving process and start the healing.

3. Use the Four-Box Sorting Method
There will be items that your family and friends don’t want or you cannot or do not want to sell. You need to decide what to do with them.
To manage the process effectively, we recommend the four-box method. Label boxes (or create piles) with the following:
- Keep (Use at Home)
Items that are essential, frequently used, or have high sentimental value and are manageable within your home. - Keep and Store
Meaningful items you don’t need immediately but want to preserve—ideal for packing away in a secure, clean storage unit. Storing in a unit away from home will make it easier to sort out later at your leisure. - Donate
Good-condition items that might benefit someone else: books, duplicate kitchenware, furniture, linens, etc. Talk to your local op-shop or charity to find out what they will accept. Organisations such as Salvation Army and SPCA are good starting points. Talking to them will determine what needs to be discarded. - Discard
Broken, outdated, or non-functional items—things even a donation centre wouldn’t accept. So make sure you find out what they take first.
This four-box method provides structure and reduces decision fatigue, helping you sort steadily with clarity and confidence.
Let Go Without Guilt
Letting go doesn't mean disrespecting your loved one. It means choosing to preserve the essence of their memory without being overwhelmed by physical belongings. If unsure, store a small “review later” box into self storage and revisit it in a few months when you are ready.
