The self storage process

As self storage can be a bit daunting, we thought we’d walk you through the process from start to finish.

First things first, locate your nearest storage facility. Once you’ve found it, either give them a call or pop in and speak to the staff. After all, they’re the experts at all things self storage!

Anyway, so you’ve decided you want to put some of your belongings into storage. Do you know how much space you’ll need? If not, try using our space calculator and size guide. These will give you an idea of how much space your belongings will take up but we always recommend that you visit the facility and ask to see the units. You might be surprised at how much you can fit into the units if you store upwards or add shelving (don’t worry, our staff can advise you on that too!)

When you visit the facility and decide to go ahead with the storage rental, you’ll be asked to fill out your details and decide whether you’d like insurance. Although the chances of damage to your belongings while they’re in self storage are small, we highly advise that you take out insurance. Ours is from NZI and is really good value, tailored, on-the-spot cover with no long forms to fill in, it may cost as little as a cup of coffee per month. You can also pick up any packaging that you might need from one of our on-site shops.

Our minimum rental period is 4 weeks and you can store with us for as long as you need to. If you find that you need to upgrade to a larger unit or downgrade to a smaller one, providing there’s a unit available, this process is simple. If there isn’t one, we’ll do our best to accommodate you. Our staff are here to help make the whole process easy for you so just ask them if you have any questions.

Once the form is completed, all you need to do is move in! You can borrow our trailer or trolleys if you need help moving your belongings, then you’re all set.

We make storage easy.

Real life ‘Storage Wars’

As you might have learned from the popular US show, Storage Wars, when people are very overdue on their payments, their units are put up for auction. Potential bidders decide whether or not to buy, based on what they can see from a photo/a short amount of time looking  into the unit from outside – no touching/moving things out of the way allowed.

Now, it’s not quite like that in real life but there have been some quite extraordinary items discovered in storage units around the world.

Here are our top three:

The submarine car from The Spy Who Loved Me

This car was found in a storage container bought by a man who had never actually seen any James Bond films in his life. Apparently eight versions of the car appear in the film but until that point, only seven could be accounted for. It was later bought by Tesla founder, Elon Musk for almost $1m.

A NASA countdown clock and rocket

These items were actually found by two of the Auction Hunters in Miami. They met with a space memorabilia expert to authenticate the items before reselling them.

Celebrities’ belongings

From Aretha Franklin’s clothes to Burt Reynolds’ film memorabilia, and Nicholas Cage’s stolen first edition of the Superman comic to unheard Michael Jackson songs, sometimes you can find all sorts of treasures hidden in self storage units.

What can I put in my self storage unit?

You can store almost anything including:

  • Household contents
  • Files and documents
  • Stock and other commercial items
  • Tools and equipment
  • Sports equipment
  • Cars
  • Boats and trailers

Don’t store any goods that are illegal, stolen, inflammable, explosive, toxic, hazardous, perishable, will attract vermin or that are a risk to the property of any person (e.g. gas, chlorine, acid, paint, petrol and anything that can leak.

If you aren’t sure whether or not you can store something, feel free to give us a call on 0800 58 57 56 and we’ll do our best to answer your questions.

A brief history of self storage

Self storage facilities as we know them today, didn’t properly exist until the late 1950s, though there is historical evidence of publicly available storage in ancient China.

In the Neolithic period, mankind was slowly developing. People started to farm the land, keep animals and create pottery, jewellery and such and so naturally, with the creation of these objects and treasures, came the need to store them somewhere safe.

Apparently, a man called Xiang Lau had accumulated a large selection of pots, stones and enemies’ bones, and he became aware that his neighbours were coveting his collection. Keen to dissuade any potential thefts, he came up with the idea of crafting large clay pots to store his precious belongings, and then burying them underground. He paid guards in food and water to watch the sites and make sure that no-one tried to steal them. Other people soon cottoned onto this idea and started to use his service for their own items.

Although this is worlds away from today’s self storage, we think it’s a great story!

Shelving makes the most of self storage

In this post we explain the benefits of putting shelving into your self storage unit.

A self storage unit is a great way to store belongings short term or long term.  If you are thinking of long term storage, investing in shelving can really pay dividends.  In this post we explain why.

The limits of stacking

When you load your belongings into your storage unit, floor space is limited.  Depending on the size of the unit, you may need to reserve an area as a walkway to access the rest of the space.  Once the floor space is used, you can only go up.  Some items lend themselves to stacking but many do not.  Even archive boxes can suffer when stacked too high.  Small items stacked upon each other can quickly create a mess.

Using the space more than once

With shelving you can use much of the floor space more than once: you can double, triple or even quadruple the horizontal space in your unit.  Your belongings can go upwards in an orderly fashion, tidily and without crushing things.  You can remove something from the bottom without everything toppling over.  And you can organise your belongings on different levels.  With shelving you can get more into a smaller unit – saving you money.

All sorts of options

If you are a handyman you can build your own shelving with materials and tools available at a DIY store.  Alternatively those same stores sell various types of shelving systems.  There are also more professional racking systems available from specialist providers for more heavy duty requirements.  There is even shelving on Trademe.

We can help make shelving easy

Our friendly staff can give you advice regarding shelving and put you in touch with suppliers.  If you would like to know more, please get in touch by calling us on 0800 58 57 56 or visiting our website.

Wellington, your valuables are safe in our self storage facilities

In this post, Kiwi Self Storage explains why its Wellington facilities are safe despite the recent earthquake.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Monday 14 November 2016 caused widespread damage in North Canterbury and Wellington.  So, if you are one of our Wellington customers, you may be wondering about the security of our Newlands and Kilbirnie facilities. We are happy to report that they are very secure. We explain in this post.

What an expert says

The President of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE), Peter Smith, says a building’s height, stiffness and the type of land it is on determines how it is affected by an earthquake. In this earthquake, Mr Smith says that buildings between eight and 15 storeys high have been damaged the most.

Safe & sound

Acting Civil Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee has warned landlords to share information about their buildings or face the consequences. This, of course, goes without saying.

Despite the earthquake, there is no damage to any of our facilities. However, we still hired a structural engineer to be sure. After a thorough inspection, our two Wellington facilities have been confirmed structurally sound.

The importance of good buildings

The recent earthquake is a reminder of the importance of choosing a storage facility that is structurally sound. Our facilities are modern and purpose built. That is important for the safety of our customers and staff and also for the protection of the things you store with us.

NZI believes in us

Insurance companies are notoriously cautious—they have to be. However, NZI is confident enough in our buildings to allow us to sell earthquake insurance to our customers. We recommend all customers insure their belongings.

Any questions?

At Kiwi Self Storage, our customers have peace of mind knowing their possessions are safe. If you would like to know more about our facilities, please get in touch by calling us on 0800 58 57 56 or visiting our website.
