Spring into summer with Kiwi Self Storage

As summer approaches, it’s a good idea to think about spring cleaning your unit and potentially swapping out your summer belongings for your winter ones. Put those skis away and retrieve your surfboards, store your winter clothes and rediscover your summer ones!

We recommend checking in on your belongings every so often while they’re in storage and a great opportunity to do this is during your annual spring clean.  You might also want to swap around some of your items and store other things while you’re at it.

Here are a few tips:

  1. Set achievable goals – you don’t have to get it all done in one go and you’ll be more likely to complete the task if it doesn’t seem impossible.
  2. Be disciplined – we like to use the six-month rule, if you haven’t used it/worn it in the last six months, throw it away or if that seems too drastic, put it in your storage unit.
  3. Donate, recycle, reuse – If you decide to throw something away, take a moment to think about whether someone else might have use of it. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure after all.

If you aren’t currently using self storage, here are some of the benefits:

  • flexible rental periods – we won’t tie you into long contracts, our minimal rental period is one month and you just need to give us two weeks’ notice when you’re ready to leave.
  • range of unit sizes – we have a large variety of unit sizes at each of our facilities, give our friendly staff a call to find out which size is right for you and if there’s one available
  • strong security measures in place – at Kiwi Self Storage we have CCTV, electric-perimeter fencing, individually-alarmed units and resident managers living on site.
  • free use of trailers and trolleys
  • access hours – you can enter your unit(s) freely between 5am-11pm, 24 hour access is available upon application.

Even if you don’t need it long term, self storage can free up space in your home, make decorating or renovating easier, be a safe place to store seasonal items, give you your spare room back…the list goes on and on because there are lots of benefits to self storage.

If you’re unsure where to start, give our staff a call on 0800 58 57 56 or visit our website for more information.

5 things to consider when you’re looking for storage

Although it can be tempting to make your self storage decisions entirely based on price, there are other things that you should take into account.

Proximity

Whether it’s the proximity to your business or home, the location of your storage facility is important. If you’re travelling overseas, you might want to look for a facility near friends or family who you can give access to your unit if you need to retrieve anything or there are any unforeseen issues. We have a number of conveniently-located facilities in Auckland and Wellington, visit our website to find out more.

Security

Security is an important factor when choosing a facility. Our facilities are protected by electric perimeter fencing, coded gates and CCTV, all units are individually alarmed and our resident managers live on site. One of the many benefits of having resident managers is that they can be quick to respond, should an emergency occur, not every facility has resident managers – Kiwi Self Storage does.

Staff

It makes everything easier if you have a good rapport with the staff who are managing the facility. They’re the storage experts and they know the facility inside and out, but most importantly, they care about keeping your belongings safe and making the process as easy as possible for you.

Cleanliness

Ask for a tour of the facility and to look inside the units so you can see the level of cleanliness throughout. You could also ask about daily maintenance and how the units are cleaned before new customers move in.

Access

Make sure you pick a facility with access hours to suit you and your needs. At Kiwi Self Storage, you can access your unit from 5am-11pm but if you need access outside those hours, 24-hour access is available on application. Ask one of our staff for more information.

Of course price is important, but we believe that you get what you pay for. We at Kiwi Self Storage strive to make the whole storage process easier for our customers. Visit one of our facilities today and let us help you with your storage requirements.

Call us on 0800 58 57 56 or fill in a short enquiry form and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Why we support Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust

Kiwi Self Storage has been a keen and loyal supporter of Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust (ARHT) and the work that it performs since 2000, increasing our annual support to become a “Full Mission Sponsor” in 2013.

For the past 47 years, Auckland’s Westpac Rescue Helicopters have served the people of the greater Auckland area, with an aero-medical rescue service that is second to none. From its pioneering days as a beach based rescue unit at Piha beach, on Auckland’s notorious west coast in 1970, to a fully-fledged service in 2017. The past 7 years have seen a major overhaul of the operation, with a second Helicopter added to the fleet, a second hanger in Coromandel, which opened in 2012, ED Doctors from Auckland hospital traveling on board and the ability to administer blood at the scene, which is a New Zealand first! The service covers an area stretching from Waihi in the south to as far north as Te Hana and has a catchment area of some 2 million people. Over this period, the service has completed some 19,500 accident free missions and has evolved into New Zealand’s only full time, 24 hour a day, air rescue service. The type of work that the helicopters carry out is as diverse as the geography and the people, with which it serves.

ARHT’s aim is to continue to maintain/improve the service so that it can continue to provide the lifesaving work that it has been performing for the last 47 years! With the continued support and understanding of the Corporate and Community sectors within the region, ARHT will be able to achieve its goal, which is to provide an aero-medical rescue service that is second to none and available to Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime.

With an average operational cost of $7,500 per rescue, ARHT relies very heavily on the Corporate & Community sectors to help fund these missions past, present and into the future.

We look forward to our continued involvement with Auckland’s Westpac Rescue Helicopters for many years to come.

The self storage process

As self storage can be a bit daunting, we thought we’d walk you through the process from start to finish.

First things first, locate your nearest storage facility. Once you’ve found it, either give them a call or pop in and speak to the staff. After all, they’re the experts at all things self storage!

Anyway, so you’ve decided you want to put some of your belongings into storage. Do you know how much space you’ll need? If not, try using our space calculator and size guide. These will give you an idea of how much space your belongings will take up but we always recommend that you visit the facility and ask to see the units. You might be surprised at how much you can fit into the units if you store upwards or add shelving (don’t worry, our staff can advise you on that too!)

When you visit the facility and decide to go ahead with the storage rental, you’ll be asked to fill out your details and decide whether you’d like insurance. Although the chances of damage to your belongings while they’re in self storage are small, we highly advise that you take out insurance. Ours is from NZI and is really good value, tailored, on-the-spot cover with no long forms to fill in, it may cost as little as a cup of coffee per month. You can also pick up any packaging that you might need from one of our on-site shops.

Our minimum rental period is 4 weeks and you can store with us for as long as you need to. If you find that you need to upgrade to a larger unit or downgrade to a smaller one, providing there’s a unit available, this process is simple. If there isn’t one, we’ll do our best to accommodate you. Our staff are here to help make the whole process easy for you so just ask them if you have any questions.

Once the form is completed, all you need to do is move in! You can borrow our trailer or trolleys if you need help moving your belongings, then you’re all set.

We make storage easy.

Unloading a sea container

Our storage centres have Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI)-approved transitional facilities so you can unload shipping containers.

First things first, you need to check that what you’re importing meets the MPI rules and regulations. These are in place to protect our environment and our international trade relationships, so before you start, make sure you adhere to them. You can find more information about preparing to import here or try this step-by-step guide.

Did you know that MPI staff inspect close to 50,000 import consignments a year and around 20% of them fail the biosecurity requirements. If your goods do not meet the regulations, there may be a charge from the shipping company and/or the transitional facility while MPI decontaminates and inspects.

Here are some guidelines for unloading sea containers at Kiwi Self Storage.

  1. Customers must select a unit and complete a Standard License Agreement including payment for the Unit and all other charges prior to the container arriving or entering the Storage Facility at Kiwi Self Storage. Note: we have a minimum Storage period of 1 month.
  2. Kiwi Self Storage must receive from the customer or the customers Agent, a Customs Delivery Order and or a Bio-security Authority Clearance Certificate (BA/CC), PRIOR to the container entering the Storage Centre at Kiwi Self Storage.
  3. No containers can come on site or be removed from site outside Office hours 8.30am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 4.00pm Saturday and Sunday. Storers are not permitted to give container trucks entrance or exit or the PIN number.
  4. The BA/CC form will identify if a MPI Officer is required to inspect the container and/or certain specific items. If a MPI Officer is required, the Container MUST NOT be opened until the MPI officer arrives (subject to arrangements made with MPI).
  5. Subject to 3 above, an Accredited Person (AP) must also be present when the container is opened at Kiwi Self Storage and remain onsite until signed off. NOTE: We will not permit a container to be opened unless Items 3 and 4 are complied with in full.
  6. All Accredited Persons (AP) must provide Kiwi Self Storage adequate ID of their Accreditation with MPI. The Accreditation may be confirmed by phone with MPI.
  7. Once a container has been opened and the contents inspected, the Accredited Person (AP), must complete a MPI Quarantine Service Container Log Sheet (Log Sheet), a copy of which will be held on file at Kiwi Self Storage and the original sent to MPI by the Accredited Person.
  8. Once the goods have been loaded into a storage unit the customer is to place a Padlock on the unit and keep the key.
  9. Containers are to be removed from Kiwi Self Storage as soon as possible. It is the responsibility of the customer to have the container removed from Kiwi Self Storage.
  10. Charges vary from facility to facility so if you’re interested in unloading a sea container at one of our facilities, please call your local facility and speak to one of our staff.

If you’d like any more information on this, do speak to our friendly managers or check out the MPI website.

Making the most of your storage unit

When you’re planning to rent self storage, it can be tempting to buy a bigger unit than you need – just in case. But what a lot of people don’t necessarily realise is that if you utilize the height of your unit, you can fit an incredible amount inside.

We were invited to check out a great example of this by one of our commercial customers.

If you store upwards, you can fit a lot more into your units. If you already have an idea of space, try our handy space calculator and size guide to see what size unit we recommend. If you aren’t sure, speak to one of our friendly managers – they will be able to help you work out what you need. Another way of making the most of your space is by using shelving. We wrote about this a little while ago on the blog, read it here.

This is why it’s important to visit the storage facility and actually take a look inside the units. It makes it much easier to estimate how much space you’ll need, sometimes it’s less than you think, sometimes it’s more.

If you’re interested in visiting one of our facilities, here is the information you’ll need.
