Security at Kiwi Self Storage

Let’s face it, you want to keep your belongings safe – otherwise you wouldn’t be putting them in storage. Security is one of our top priorities too and we’ve got all bases covered!

CCTV

We’ve got CCTV cameras all around our facility with live-stream screens in the main office.

Electric-perimeter fencing

These fences are a powerful anti-intruder measure and we’ve got them at all of our facilities.

Coded gates

When you sign up for self storage, you’ll be asked to choose a 5 digit pin number, which you’ll need to enter each time you visit the facility.  When you drive up to the gate, you need to enter # and then your private pin number followed by *. Only then will the alarm on your unit or units be disarmed and the gate open. There is an entry gate and exit gate and when you enter your code to open the exit gate, it will re-engage the alarms on your unit(s).

Individually-alarmed units

Every unit is alarmed and becomes disarmed when you enter your code at the gate and when you exit the facility, you are required to enter your code again. If you skip this step, when you attempt to unlock your unit, the alarm will be sounded and if this happens out of office hours, you might incur a call-out fee from our security company.

Resident managers

One of the best things about Kiwi Self Storage is our resident managers who live on site. Not only are they storage specialists, but they can be quick to respond should an emergency occur or an alarm sound.

If you like, head on down to your nearest Kiwi Self Storage facility and ask our friendly staff to show you around the facility. We advise doing this anyway so you can get an idea of the unit sizes and storage process. Call today on 0800 58 57 56 or visit our website for more information.

Keeping your items safe in storage

We’ve talked before about how secure and safe our storage facilities are, but another thing that’s important to consider is how to store things carefully, in order to protect them for the duration of the lease.

Before storage

We always say, as a general rule you should put everything into boxes and anything that will not fit into boxes should be covered. Boxes should be filled to capacity but not overfilled; partially full or bulging boxes may tip or collapse. We sell boxes and a whole range of other packing supplies at each of our facilities.

Another key thing to bear in mind is that your belongings aren’t automatically covered by insurance if you use self storage, you’ll need to check whether your items are covered by your home contents insurance if you take the items away from home (some insurance companies cover this but not all), if they aren’t, we recommend taking out separate insurance – ours is from NZI and costs as little as a cup of coffee per month. You can read more about this in an earlier post.

If you’re moving boxes and furniture into self storage on a damp, rainy day or if you’re storing any aquatic equipment, it’s really important to dry all of the items thoroughly before leaving them in your storage unit. Otherwise, regardless of whether you use our recommended furniture or mattress covers, you could encourage mould or mildew to develop on the items. Another tip is to make sure that there’s enough space between the items when they’re in the unit…if you cram everything into too small a space, the air can’t flow freely.

If you’re planning to access the unit regularly, make sure that you have a large enough unit that you can access everything that you need to without risk of injury. If you’re putting items into storage that you won’t need to access until the end of your rental period, then you can maximise the height of the unit and fill up the space.

During storage

It’s a good idea to come and check on your units every few months, or at least, every change of seasons. This gives you the opportunity to check that everything is how you left it, add more or take some items away, re-tape any boxes that have become unstuck and generally make sure everything is as it should be. In the unlikely situation that you do discover any damage, go and speak to the facility managers immediately.

If you’re unsure about anything to do with the self storage process, the best thing you can do is speak to one of our managers – they’re the self storage specialists after all. Give them a call today on 0800 58 57 56 or visit our website.

Our top 10 tips for moving house

We know moving can be stressful, with a seemingly endless list of things to do, so here are our top 10 tips for moving house.

  1. Get rid of anything that you don’t actually need
    • Yes, we know this sounds obvious but hoarding unused and unnecessary items is something we’re all guilty of…ask yourself, have you used it in the last six months?
  2. Set aside any items that you could sell
    • Within reason, there’s a good chance that someone might be interested in your old belongings. Whether you have time to take them to a car boot sale or, selling them on TradeMe or Facebook Market Place is easier, it’s worth a go!
  3. Research moving companies
    • Like with storage companies, there are other factors in play than just price and proximity when you’re entrusting your treasured belongings to strangers. It’s important to get it right.
    • Read reviews, go and meet the staff in person and generally make sure you feel comfortable with them.
  4. Write a ‘to do’ list
    • Again, we know this sounds obvious but there are so many things to think about when you’re moving house, organise it by date and check things off as you go along.
    • Some examples: cancelling your subscriptions, setting up a redirect for your mail, giving notice to utility companies etc.
  5. Pack a ‘Moving Day’ box/bag of useful items that you’ll need speedy access to on the day
    • Scissors, tools, bottles of water, snacks, toilet paper, hand soap, bedding, phone chargers, something to play music on etc.
    • Also pack an overnight bag, it’s unlikely that you’ll get everything unpacked on the first night so having the essentials for your first night will make everything easier.
  6. Label boxes clearly
    • Whether it’s by colour-coding, writing on the sides, stickers or tape, this will save you a lot of time in the long run and make things easier to find.
    • Load boxes from the same room together so that you can unload them all at the same time too.
  7. Pack your clothes by putting them into a bin bag while they’re still on the hangers, tuck the hanging clothes into the bag, tighten around the tops of the hanger and there you go! This way you can simply hang them up and take off the bag when you get to your new home.
  8. Protect fragile items with bubble wrap, prowrap or blankets
    • Use dish towels to protect crockery, saving space! Also pack dishes vertically rather than horizontally.
  9. Take photos of the backs of your electronic items so that it’s easier to plug everything back in when you get to your new place.
  10. Clean and defrost your fridge at least a day before you move in, the last thing you want to do is unload a damp, smelly fridge and then have to clean it again before you can use it.

At Kiwi Self Storage, we aim to make the whole storage process easy for our staff. You can buy packaging materials from all of our facilities, borrow trailers and trolleys and our staff can recommend moving companies. The Waterview Tunnel and the benefits for our customers

Work on the tunnel first began in 2013 and was completed this July. The tunnel opening was much anticipated for us at Kiwi Self Storage because of how convenient it makes travelling to and from our Mt Roskill facility.

Thanks to the tunnel, our Mt Roskill facility is now at the heart of Auckland, with excellent access for our business customers to use the motorway network north, south, west and to the airport.

Understandably, we’re delighted at how easy it is for people to access our facility but we’re not alone in our praise for the tunnel – you’ve no doubt heard countless people expressing their delight at how much shorter their journeys have been since the tunnel opened? There are also some great stories on the NZ Transport Agency website about how the tunnel has helped businesses and our fellow Aucklanders connect with their family and friends.

Here are some facts about the tunnel that you might not know…

We mentioned earlier about the tunnel being one of the benefits for our business customers, in addition to the tunnel opening, our Mt Roskill centre is an MPI-approved transitional facility so you can unload sea containers.

If you’re interested, we’ve written about the benefits of self storage for businesses before:

5 things to consider when you’re looking for storage

Although it can be tempting to make your self storage decisions entirely based on price, there are other things that you should take into account.

Proximity

Whether it’s the proximity to your business or home, the location of your storage facility is important. If you’re travelling overseas, you might want to look for a facility near friends or family who you can give access to your unit if you need to retrieve anything or there are any unforeseen issues. We have a number of conveniently-located facilities in Auckland and Wellington, visit our website to find out more.

Security

Security is an important factor when choosing a facility. Our facilities are protected by electric perimeter fencing, coded gates and CCTV, all units are individually alarmed and our resident managers live on site. One of the many benefits of having resident managers is that they can be quick to respond, should an emergency occur, not every facility has resident managers – Kiwi Self Storage does.

Staff

It makes everything easier if you have a good rapport with the staff who are managing the facility. They’re the storage experts and they know the facility inside and out, but most importantly, they care about keeping your belongings safe and making the process as easy as possible for you.

Cleanliness

Ask for a tour of the facility and to look inside the units so you can see the level of cleanliness throughout. You could also ask about daily maintenance and how the units are cleaned before new customers move in.

Access

Make sure you pick a facility with access hours to suit you and your needs. At Kiwi Self Storage, you can access your unit from 5am-11pm but if you need access outside those hours, 24-hour access is available on application. Ask one of our staff for more information.

Of course price is important, but we believe that you get what you pay for. We at Kiwi Self Storage strive to make the whole storage process easier for our customers. Visit one of our facilities today and let us help you with your storage requirements.
