Spring into summer with Kiwi Self Storage

As summer approaches, it’s a good idea to think about spring cleaning your unit and potentially swapping out your summer belongings for your winter ones. Put those skis away and retrieve your surfboards, store your winter clothes and rediscover your summer ones!

We recommend checking in on your belongings every so often while they’re in storage and a great opportunity to do this is during your annual spring clean.  You might also want to swap around some of your items and store other things while you’re at it.

Here are a few tips:

  1. Set achievable goals – you don’t have to get it all done in one go and you’ll be more likely to complete the task if it doesn’t seem impossible.
  2. Be disciplined – we like to use the six-month rule, if you haven’t used it/worn it in the last six months, throw it away or if that seems too drastic, put it in your storage unit.
  3. Donate, recycle, reuse – If you decide to throw something away, take a moment to think about whether someone else might have use of it. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure after all.

If you aren’t currently using self storage, here are some of the benefits:

  • flexible rental periods – we won’t tie you into long contracts, our minimal rental period is one month and you just need to give us two weeks’ notice when you’re ready to leave.
  • range of unit sizes – we have a large variety of unit sizes at each of our facilities, give our friendly staff a call to find out which size is right for you and if there’s one available
  • strong security measures in place – at Kiwi Self Storage we have CCTV, electric-perimeter fencing, individually-alarmed units and resident managers living on site.
  • free use of trailers and trolleys
  • access hours – you can enter your unit(s) freely between 5am-11pm, 24 hour access is available upon application.

Even if you don’t need it long term, self storage can free up space in your home, make decorating or renovating easier, be a safe place to store seasonal items, give you your spare room back…the list goes on and on because there are lots of benefits to self storage.

Looking for document storage?

Have you considered using a self storage unit to store your company archives boxes?

With the increasing costs of office rental, keeping your records and archives off site can free up space and save you a fair bit of money.

Think about it:

  • there are lots of different unit sizes available so if you suddenly find yourself in need of more space, you can upgrade
  • you can add shelving to make it easier to organise
  • all units are individually alarmed and the facilities are protected by electric-perimeter fencing, coded gates and CCTV
  • you can access your unit from 5am-11pm at our facilities but 24-7 access is available on application.
  • we have trolleys and trailers for our customers to borrow, which will make moving the boxes around easier

How to stage your home for a quick sale

One of the reasons that people choose to store with us is that they’re selling their house, so we thought we’d scour the internet and round up some helpful tips for anyone staging their home.

We hope you find these useful!

  1. First impressions count – people will start evaluating your house before they even step inside so make sure the outside of your home looks welcoming too. Tidy up the garden if you have one, make sure your door is clean (i.e. doesn’t have any remnants of last year’s Halloween decorations on!) and clean your windows.
  2. Clear your home of clutter – you don’t have to throw away all of your belongings but by de-cluttering your rooms, you’ll not only make the house look tidier but you’ll make the spaces look larger.
  3. Similarly, people are interested to see how much storage you’ve got and it doesn’t look great if your cupboards and closets are filled to the brim. Aim to have about 20-30% space left in each area.
  4. Consider rearranging your furniture a bit – there’s a common misconception that by pushing all of your furniture against the walls, the room will feel larger but apparently floating them away from the walls can help the space feel more friendly and open.
  5. If you’ve got a spare room that you’re just using to store things in, consider moving those items into storage and setting the room up as an office or a reading room or something that people can envisage themselves using.
  6. Painting your room in neutral colours can help potential buyers picture what they could do with the room, it is also much easier for people to paint over neutral colours than to get rid of a bold colour – i.e. less effort for the buyers.
  7. Make sure everything works – if you have any lightbulbs that are out or clocks missing batteries, these are small things but they can look like you don’t care enough about the property to fix them.
  8. Find the balance between clean and lived in – make sure the house is clean and smells pleasant, if you have a pet, make sure to let some fresh air in – you might be used to the smell but potential buyers won’t be. Maybe invite a friend or neighbour over and see what they think.
  9. Remove any potentially controversial items and anything too personal – people like to imagine themselves in the space and this is hard to do if there are lots of family photos or anything that people might be offended by. These can take pride of place in your new home but might sway potential buyers’ minds.
  10. Fresh flowers is always a nice touch – if they’re from your garden, even better!

At Kiwi Self Storage, we offer flexible rental agreements and our minimum stay is only one month so if you need us, you know where to find us.

Making the most of your storage unit

When you’re planning to rent self storage, it can be tempting to buy a bigger unit than you need – just in case. But what a lot of people don’t necessarily realise is that if you utilize the height of your unit, you can fit an incredible amount inside.

We were invited to check out a great example of this by one of our commercial customers.

If you store upwards, you can fit a lot more into your units. If you already have an idea of space, try our handy space calculator and size guide to see what size unit we recommend. If you aren’t sure, speak to one of our friendly managers – they will be able to help you work out what you need. Another way of making the most of your space is by using shelving. We wrote about this a little while ago on the blog, read it here.

This is why it’s important to visit the storage facility and actually take a look inside the units. It makes it much easier to estimate how much space you’ll need, sometimes it’s less than you think, sometimes it’s more.

“We had three storage units over a number of months. What made the experience fantastic? We were treated as people and called by our names rather than our unit numbers. “We stored our household items with Kiwi Self Storage for 15 months, while moving overseas. Allan from Kiwi storage, went really out of his way. He gave me a hand with a trip to the dump, provided access to the storage facilities to other people while we were overseas. He responded promptly to e-mails and adjusted the storage terms to our fairly fluid plans. I highly recommend Allan and Kiwi Self Storage to look after you, while you are moving overseas where things could change and you need someone to be flexible and helpful back in New Zealand.” – Sebastian Ziemke
