Security at Kiwi Self Storage

Let’s face it, you want to keep your belongings safe – otherwise you wouldn’t be putting them in storage. Security is one of our top priorities too and we’ve got all bases covered!

CCTV

We’ve got CCTV cameras all around our facility with live-stream screens in the main office.

Electric-perimeter fencing

These fences are a powerful anti-intruder measure and we’ve got them at all of our facilities.

Coded gates

When you sign up for self storage, you’ll be asked to choose a 5 digit pin number, which you’ll need to enter each time you visit the facility.  When you drive up to the gate, you need to enter # and then your private pin number followed by *. Only then will the alarm on your unit or units be disarmed and the gate open. There is an entry gate and exit gate and when you enter your code to open the exit gate, it will re-engage the alarms on your unit(s).

Individually-alarmed units

Every unit is alarmed and becomes disarmed when you enter your code at the gate and when you exit the facility, you are required to enter your code again. If you skip this step, when you attempt to unlock your unit, the alarm will be sounded and if this happens out of office hours, you might incur a call-out fee from our security company.

Resident managers

One of the best things about Kiwi Self Storage is our resident managers who live on site. Not only are they storage specialists, but they can be quick to respond should an emergency occur or an alarm sound.

If you like, head on down to your nearest Kiwi Self Storage facility and ask our friendly staff to show you around the facility. We advise doing this anyway so you can get an idea of the unit sizes and storage process. Call today on 0800 58 57 56 or visit our website for more information.

Keeping your items safe in storage

We’ve talked before about how secure and safe our storage facilities are, but another thing that’s important to consider is how to store things carefully, in order to protect them for the duration of the lease.

Before storage

We always say, as a general rule you should put everything into boxes and anything that will not fit into boxes should be covered. Boxes should be filled to capacity but not overfilled; partially full or bulging boxes may tip or collapse. We sell boxes and a whole range of other packing supplies at each of our facilities.

Another key thing to bear in mind is that your belongings aren’t automatically covered by insurance if you use self storage, you’ll need to check whether your items are covered by your home contents insurance if you take the items away from home (some insurance companies cover this but not all), if they aren’t, we recommend taking out separate insurance – ours is from NZI and costs as little as a cup of coffee per month. You can read more about this in an earlier post.

If you’re moving boxes and furniture into self storage on a damp, rainy day or if you’re storing any aquatic equipment, it’s really important to dry all of the items thoroughly before leaving them in your storage unit. Otherwise, regardless of whether you use our recommended furniture or mattress covers, you could encourage mould or mildew to develop on the items. Another tip is to make sure that there’s enough space between the items when they’re in the unit…if you cram everything into too small a space, the air can’t flow freely.

If you’re planning to access the unit regularly, make sure that you have a large enough unit that you can access everything that you need to without risk of injury. If you’re putting items into storage that you won’t need to access until the end of your rental period, then you can maximise the height of the unit and fill up the space.

During storage

It’s a good idea to come and check on your units every few months, or at least, every change of seasons. This gives you the opportunity to check that everything is how you left it, add more or take some items away, re-tape any boxes that have become unstuck and generally make sure everything is as it should be. In the unlikely situation that you do discover any damage, go and speak to the facility managers immediately.

If you’re unsure about anything to do with the self storage process, the best thing you can do is speak to one of our managers – they’re the self storage specialists after all. Give them a call today on 0800 58 57 56 or visit our website.

The Waterview Tunnel and the benefits for our customers

Work on the tunnel first began in 2013 and was completed this July. The tunnel opening was much anticipated for us at Kiwi Self Storage because of how convenient it makes travelling to and from our Mt Roskill facility.

Thanks to the tunnel, our Mt Roskill facility is now at the heart of Auckland, with excellent access for our business customers to use the motorway network north, south, west and to the airport.

Understandably, we’re delighted at how easy it is for people to access our facility but we’re not alone in our praise for the tunnel – you’ve no doubt heard countless people expressing their delight at how much shorter their journeys have been since the tunnel opened? There are also some great stories on the NZ Transport Agency website about how the tunnel has helped businesses and our fellow Aucklanders connect with their family and friends.

Here are some facts about the tunnel that you might not know…

We mentioned earlier about the tunnel being one of the benefits for our business customers, in addition to the tunnel opening, our Mt Roskill centre is an MPI-approved transitional facility so you can unload sea containers.

If you’re interested, we’ve written about the benefits of self storage for businesses before:

Has the Waterview Tunnel opened up options for your business? If it has and you think you could benefit from renting a storage unit, give our friendly managers a call today on 0800 58 57 56 or visit our website.

Utilizing self storage while you’re away from home

International travel is becoming increasingly more accessible, and a lot of our customers use our self storage facilities to keep some of their belongings in while they’re away. It’s also a great way to save money while you build or search for a new home. By putting your bulky items into storage, you can look at temporarily renting a smaller place until you find your next home, rather than having to find a place that can accommodate you and all of your furniture.

Either way, whether you’re off on your OE (overseas experience), taking a sabbatical, moving or looking to rent out your home, apartment or room through a company like airbnb, self storage can be a really convenient solution for you. We have flexible rental agreements – if your trip is extended or shortened, we can accommodate, we offer hassle-free insurance from NZI and our resident managers do lock checks of all units every day to make sure that your belongings are safe.

We always recommend that people store their items properly when they rent one of our units.  This includes boxing whatever can be boxed and covering anything that can’t be, including mattresses, sofas, desks etc. with plastic covers. We sell all of these at our facilities and for more storage tips, check out our post about how to pack for storage.

Unloading a sea container

Our storage centres have Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI)-approved transitional facilities so you can unload shipping containers.

First things first, you need to check that what you’re importing meets the MPI rules and regulations. These are in place to protect our environment and our international trade relationships, so before you start, make sure you adhere to them. You can find more information about preparing to import here or try this step-by-step guide.

Did you know that MPI staff inspect close to 50,000 import consignments a year and around 20% of them fail the biosecurity requirements. If your goods do not meet the regulations, there may be a charge from the shipping company and/or the transitional facility while MPI decontaminates and inspects.

Here are some guidelines for unloading sea containers at Kiwi Self Storage.

  1. Customers must select a unit and complete a Standard License Agreement including payment for the Unit and all other charges prior to the container arriving or entering the Storage Facility at Kiwi Self Storage. Note: we have a minimum Storage period of 1 month.
  2. Kiwi Self Storage must receive from the customer or the customers Agent, a Customs Delivery Order and or a Bio-security Authority Clearance Certificate (BA/CC), PRIOR to the container entering the Storage Centre at Kiwi Self Storage.
  3. No containers can come on site or be removed from site outside Office hours 8.30am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 4.00pm Saturday and Sunday. Storers are not permitted to give container trucks entrance or exit or the PIN number.
  4. The BA/CC form will identify if a MPI Officer is required to inspect the container and/or certain specific items. If a MPI Officer is required, the Container MUST NOT be opened until the MPI officer arrives (subject to arrangements made with MPI).
  5. Subject to 3 above, an Accredited Person (AP) must also be present when the container is opened at Kiwi Self Storage and remain onsite until signed off. NOTE: We will not permit a container to be opened unless Items 3 and 4 are complied with in full.
  6. All Accredited Persons (AP) must provide Kiwi Self Storage adequate ID of their Accreditation with MPI. The Accreditation may be confirmed by phone with MPI.
  7. Once a container has been opened and the contents inspected, the Accredited Person (AP), must complete a MPI Quarantine Service Container Log Sheet (Log Sheet), a copy of which will be held on file at Kiwi Self Storage and the original sent to MPI by the Accredited Person.
  8. Once the goods have been loaded into a storage unit the customer is to place a Padlock on the unit and keep the key.
  9. Containers are to be removed from Kiwi Self Storage as soon as possible. It is the responsibility of the customer to have the container removed from Kiwi Self Storage.
  10. Charges vary from facility to facility so if you’re interested in unloading a sea container at one of our facilities, please call your local facility and speak to one of our staff.

If you’d like any more information on this, do speak to our friendly managers or check out the MPI website.

Making the most of your storage unit

When you’re planning to rent self storage, it can be tempting to buy a bigger unit than you need – just in case. But what a lot of people don’t necessarily realise is that if you utilize the height of your unit, you can fit an incredible amount inside.

We were invited to check out a great example of this by one of our commercial customers.

If you store upwards, you can fit a lot more into your units. If you already have an idea of space, try our handy space calculator and size guide to see what size unit we recommend. If you aren’t sure, speak to one of our friendly managers – they will be able to help you work out what you need. Another way of making the most of your space is by using shelving. We wrote about this a little while ago on the blog, read it here.

This is why it’s important to visit the storage facility and actually take a look inside the units. It makes it much easier to estimate how much space you’ll need, sometimes it’s less than you think, sometimes it’s more.

If you’re interested in visiting one of our facilities, here is the information you’ll need.
