Making the most of your storage unit

When you’re planning to rent self storage, it can be tempting to buy a bigger unit than you need – just in case. But what a lot of people don’t necessarily realise is that if you utilize the height of your unit, you can fit an incredible amount inside.

We were invited to check out a great example of this by one of our commercial customers.

If you store upwards, you can fit a lot more into your units. If you already have an idea of space, try our handy space calculator and size guide to see what size unit we recommend. If you aren’t sure, speak to one of our friendly managers – they will be able to help you work out what you need. Another way of making the most of your space is by using shelving. We wrote about this a little while ago on the blog, read it here.

This is why it’s important to visit the storage facility and actually take a look inside the units. It makes it much easier to estimate how much space you’ll need, sometimes it’s less than you think, sometimes it’s more.

If you’re interested in visiting one of our facilities, here is the information you’ll need.

Utilising self storage for business

As you know, self storage isn’t just a great option for domestic use. Increasing numbers of businesses use self storage for lots of different reasons. In fact, around 25% of our customers are businesses!

All sorts of businesses can utilise self storage in some way. Here are some of the most common uses.

Document storage

Self storage units are a great way to store your archived documents. Free up space in your office and have access to your archived files whenever you need. All of our units are clean, dry and individually alarmed so your documents will be safe.

Import/Export

Most of our centres have MPI-approved transitional facilities for unloading sea containers so you can buy and store in bulk. If your operation is smaller, you can use the storage space to ‘pick and pack’, our friendly managers can assist with deliveries if you need.

Tool/equipment storage

If you’re a tradesman, your tools are crucial to your trade. By keeping them in a self storage unit rather than your van or garage, you can rest assured that they are safe and secure. We know how costly replacing tools and equipment can be, remove the risk by storing it with us.

Startups and small businesses

Renting office space can be expensive, especially if you have lots of products to store, taking up valuable space. By keeping your bulk bought or created products in a storage unit, you can maximise the space you have. Also, if you’re starting a small business from home, self storage can prevent this taking over your whole house.

Our rental agreements are flexible, you can upgrade or downgrade your unit size to meet the changing needs of your business and most importantly, your products will be safe and secure in our facilities.

If it’s worth storing, it’s worth insuring.

Although thankfully the chances of damage to your belongings while they’re in self storage are small, it is still highly advisable to take out insurance on them.

First things first, if you’re storing items from your home, check your current home contents insurance policy to see whether the items are covered when they are away from your property and for how long they’ll be covered when they’re away from your home. Not all policies cover this but some do so it’s worth checking this first. One thing to bear in mind however if your policy does cover your contents when they are away from home, is that you might have to give them notice that you’re moving the items, and wait for this to be approved before you can actually do it.

Kiwi Self Storage offer really good value, tailored insurance that you can purchase on site when you sign up for storage. It’s on-the-spot cover with no long forms to fill in, no having to wait on the phone to speak to an insurance company and no call centres. It’s as simple as ticking a box, and depending on how much insurance cover you need, it may costs as little as a cup of coffee per month. Plus, this is often a lot simpler than trying to extend your current coverage and keeps things separate. If you do choose to go with our insurance, you don’t need to worry about the policy expiring because as long as you’re storing with us, your items will be insured.

At Kiwi Self Storage, our insurance provider is NZI and if you have any questions about it, our friendly managers are on hand to answer them for you. Give them a call on 0800 58 57 56 or visit our website for more information about self storage.

Self storage for businesses

Most people are aware of the benefits of using self storage for residential purposes, but did you know that more and more businesses have started utilizing self storage units to grow their business too?

Here are the three biggest benefits to using self storage for your business:

  1. They give you the opportunity to buy or create products in bulk without them taking over your home.
  2. The rental agreements are flexible so you can downgrade or upgrade your space easily as your business evolves.
  3. Self storage units are conveniently located and secure.

At Kiwi Self Storage, we can help with deliveries and we also have transitional facilities in both Auckland and Wellington so you can unload containers. That plus free use of trolleys and trailers, on-site managers and lots of experience helping small- and medium-sized businesses makes it easy.

Planning, packaging and packing

Whether you’re moving house, taking a sabbatical, starting a small business, planning to rent out your spare room on Airbnb, redecorating etc. it’s important to pack your belongings properly.

As we’ve said before, a general rule for packing is that you should put everything into boxes and anything that doesn’t fit into boxes should be covered. Even if your storage facility is clean and dry, covering up items such as mattresses and sofas ensures that they stay fresh.

Boxes should be filled to capacity but not overfilled; partially full or bulging boxes may tip or collapse. Heavy items like books and tools should be packed in smaller boxes so they are easy to handle. Packing and labeling boxes room by room makes the unpacking much easier and if you need to find something in storage you will have some idea of which carton to begin looking in.

We like to use coloured stickers on ours – make sure you put them on the side of the box and not the top though! All you need is a selection of coloured stickers and one piece of paper which indexes which colours represent which rooms. Easy!

At Kiwi Self Storage, we’re there for you when you need us. We sell a range of sturdy cardboard boxes, padlocks, bubble wrap and wrapping paper, furniture covers and packing tape at all of our facilities, and we can advise you on how to make the most of your space.

We make storage easy.

Real life ‘Storage Wars’

As you might have learned from the popular US show, Storage Wars, when people are very overdue on their payments, their units are put up for auction. Potential bidders decide whether or not to buy, based on what they can see from a photo/a short amount of time looking  into the unit from outside – no touching/moving things out of the way allowed.

Now, it’s not quite like that in real life but there have been some quite extraordinary items discovered in storage units around the world.

Here are our top three:

The submarine car from The Spy Who Loved Me

This car was found in a storage container bought by a man who had never actually seen any James Bond films in his life. Apparently eight versions of the car appear in the film but until that point, only seven could be accounted for. It was later bought by Tesla founder, Elon Musk for almost $1m.

A NASA countdown clock and rocket

These items were actually found by two of the Auction Hunters in Miami. They met with a space memorabilia expert to authenticate the items before reselling them.

Celebrities’ belongings

From Aretha Franklin’s clothes to Burt Reynolds’ film memorabilia, and Nicholas Cage’s stolen first edition of the Superman comic to unheard Michael Jackson songs, sometimes you can find all sorts of treasures hidden in self storage units.
